Homeless shelters provide temporary residence for those that can no longer afford to pay rent themselves. This could apply to an individual or a family and no matter what their situation, they are always welcome at a homeless shelter. These homeless people come and stay for a short period of time while the homeless shelter helps them with aspects of their life to help them get back on track and back living independently. Homeless shelters also offer many other assistance programs such as substance abuse treatment, soup kitchens, job and skills training and support groups.

Homeless shelters are sometimes associated with churches or municipal governments. They are funded by the government and many homeless shelters are being erected across the country to combat the growing percentage of homeless people in America. The Department of Housing and Urban Development has shown that there are many households in the United States that pay more than half of their income on rent alone – not including food, education or transportation. This leads them to becoming especially susceptible to becoming homeless, which is why these homeless shelters are becoming increasingly popular in urban areas.

Organizations That Help The Homeless

The Salvation Army is a social service organization and a religious group who, through social service programs, helps fight sin and despair. Through working with the Christian Church, the Salvation Army has helped children, women, elderly men, addicts and family’s through tough times for more than 130 years.

Gospel Rescue Missions offer services to everyone, no matter what their age, race, religion, color, or origin may be.

Department of Veterans Affairs targets homeless veterans and their dependents with their special initiatives and programs all across the country.

Feeding America is a hunger relief charity and it is the leading one in the United States. They provide food assistance for over 25 million low-income people across the country including children and seniors.

Government Assistance Programs

The Social Security Administration has programs that are designed to help people with disabilities. The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSD) and Social Security Supplemental Income (SSI) programs are two of these programs and while they are similar in some ways, they are also different. Firstly, you must meet certain medical criteria to qualify for any benefits of either program. With SSI, you get benefits based on your financial need and with SSD, you get benefits if you are "insured", meaning if you have worked long enough and have paid Social Security taxes. Both aim to improve the lives of those that are disabled.
